Laurie Ajavon and Brianna Liebold both broke the school record and earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump and finished first and second, respectively, in that event as well as the triple jump at the Jim Wuske Invitational hosted by Mount Union. Ajavon had a jump of 19 feet, 2 ½ inches, which should place her in the top 10 in the nation this week, and Liebold went 18 feet, 8 ½ inches in the long jump, with both marks eclipsing Liebold's previous IUP indoor record of 18 feet, 5 ¾ inches. Ajavon came within .05 meters of meeting the NCAA automatic qualifying standard in the long jump. In the triple jump, Ajavon had a mark of 36 feet, 10 ¼ inches and Liebold covered 36 feet, 5 ½ inches to take the top two spots. Liebold also qualified for the finals in the 55 meter dash and finished fifth overall with a time of 7.56. The IUP men accounted for four event titles, including a pair of Nafee Harris in the long jump and 55 meters. One week after automatically qualifying for nationals and taking over the No. 1 spot in the nation in the long jump, Harris improved his mark five inches with a distance of 25 feet, 3 ½ inches. Harris also won the 55 meters in 6.57 seconds and was fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.16. Other first place finishes were turned in by Leander Toney in the high jump (6 feet, 7 ½ inches) and Kevin Raymond in the 400 meters (49.84). Matt Celestin was second in the triple jump (46 feet, 4 ¼ inches) and Yoann Godet was third in the 500 meters (1:13.05). Only a portion of the IUP team was able to travel to the meet before the state of emergency declared in Indiana Country held back most of the sprinters and distance runners. Both IUP teams are back in action next week at the Slippery Rock Open. |
