Maddy Outman earned an automatic qualification for the NCAA outdoor meet in the heptathlon, compiling a school record 4,975 points and finishing third behind only a pair of runners from the University of North Carolina at the prestigious Penn Relays Wednesday in Philadelphia. Outman's point total broke the IUP record of 4,900 that was set by Becky Bullard in 2003 and is the fourth highest mark in Division II so far this season. She was just three points behind Alexandria Coppadge of the Tar Heels. Outman won two of the seven events that comprise the heptathlon, including the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.54 and the 800 meters in 2:19.78. She was also second in the 200 meters (25.47) and third in the long jump (17 feet, 4 ¼ inches) and javelin (103-4). Her other marks included a high jump of 5-3 ¾ and a shot put throw of 31-3. The heptathlon marks the fourth event that Outman has earned an NCAA qualifying mark and first that was automatic. She has also gained provisional qualifications in the 100 and 400 meter hurdles as the long jump. |
