Sean Strauman and Maureen Newell turned in the top performances for the IUP
track and field team on Saturday at the Kane Invitational hosted by Cornell
University.
Strauman broke his own PSAC record in the 1000 meters by three seconds,
finishing second overall with a time of 2:25.69. Newell lowered her best
time of the season in the mile and clinched a spot at the NCAA meet by
crossing third in 5:02.55.
Troy Litten was third in the pole vault for the IUP men by clearing the bar
at 15 feet, three inches. In a field of 44 runners in the women’s 3000
meters, Laura Blaesser (10:45.08) and Stacie Stockard (10:47.35) finished
10th and 12th, respectively, to earn spots at the PSAC meet.
Also turning in high
finishes were Gretchen Colwell in the shot put (fourth, 40-1 1/4), Erica
Hoffman in the mile (fifth, 5:13.20) and Nate Shelly in the 3000 meters
(seventh, 8:56.23).
Both IUP teams will compete at the Kent State Invitational next Saturday.
The PSAC meet will take place Mar. 1-2 at East Stroudsburg and the NCAA
championships are Mar. 14-15 in Mankato, Minn.
