Jen Price set an IUP school record and finished second in the women's 1000 freestyle while three other Crimson Hawk swimmers scored in the event on the first day of the PSAC championships behind held at Cumberland Valley High School. Price posted a time of 10:16.17 to finish just 1.52 seconds behind Marianne Juhl of California. Price's mark beat her seed time by over 30 seconds and shattered the previous school record of 10:30.95 held by Heidi Mitskavich since 2005. Also scoring for the women was Kara Peters, who was eighth with a time of 10:38.63. David Donovan and Jeff Gavin were seventh and ninth, respectively, with Donovan falling just shy of setting a school record. His time of 9:45.29 was only .51 behind the IUP record set by Hamilton Terrell in 2003 and earned him an NCAA B cut. Gavin came in two spots behind Donovan with a time of 9:48.55 and just missed out on the NCAA qualifying standard. The second and eighth place finishes give the IUP women a total of 28 points, second only to West Chester's 38. The IUP men used their two high finishes to score 21 points, good for fourth place. The 1000 freestyle was the only event on the first day of competition. A full slate of preliminary and finals events begin Friday and continued through Sunday. |
