Stephen Hoch earned an NCAA B cut and was joined by Jackie Hynson in reaching the A finals in the 100 butterfly on the second day of the Zippy Invitational hosted by the University of Akron. Hoch tied for sixth with a time of 51.23 and Hynson was fifth in 57.96 for the top finishes for IUP Saturday. Five other IUP men qualified for B finals and finished in the top 16. The group was led by Kyle Ford, who won his heat and finished ninth overall in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:11.83. Walter Smith was 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:44.18), Gio Sherk was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (59.93), John Winter was 15th in the 100 backstroke (54.39) and Dylan Mudlo was 15th in the 100 butterfly (52.87). The men's 200 medley relay team of Mudlo, Sherk, Smith and Josh Huger was eighth in 1:36.04 while the 800 freestyle relay team of Mudlo, Luke Shaheen, Dan Lumas and Anthony Termin was ninth in 7:11.56. Five IUP men, including Winter, Andrew Maier, Jimmy Yelinek, Robert Wilson and Nathan Stephens, have turned in PSAC qualifying times so far this weekend. That gives the Crimson Hawks a current total of 15 men who will be competing at the conference meet, the most in Chris Villa's four seasons as head coach. The Zippy Invitational wraps up Sunday. |
