IUP freshman swimmer David Donovan has been selected as a recipient of the Chacivity Award, which recognizes students who demonstrate behaviors that are uplifting to the university community and display courage, civility, leadership, integrity and initiative.

The award, which combines the words Character, Civility and Integrity, is presented by IUP's Office of Student Conduct.

Donovan was nominated for the award by Dr. Judith Villa, a professor in the Department of English. Despite his busy class and swimming schedule, Donovan accepted Dr. Villa's request to assist challenged and under-prepared students in her College Writing class during the fall semester.

Through Donovan's efforts, one of the students he mentored was able to overcome his writing fears and achieve a passing grade in the class. Dr. Villa praised Donovan for being a "fabulous and generous mentor and making himself available above and beyond" what was expected of him.

Donovan earned a 4.0 grade point average in his first semester at IUP and also had a successful freshman season in the pool. The graduate of General McLane High School in Edinboro finished seventh at the PSAC meet in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyles, set a school freshman record in the 500 free and earned two NCAA "B" cuts.
