The IUP men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2008 season by taking first place at the Davis & Elkins Invitational.

The men finished with 30 points and the women had 23 points as both teams outdistanced fields of eight squads with West Virginia Wesleyan placing second in both races.

Both IUP teams had runners finish 2-3-4 and had place seven in the top 15. On the men's side, Nate Shelly was second in 28:39, followed by Matt Gaudet (29:03) and Sean Strauman (29:11).

Strauman was competing in his first college cross country race after starring as an 800 meter specialist on the IUP track and field team the past four years.

In the women's race, Maureen Newell was second in 24:57, followed by Lindsey Scheller and Stacie Stockard, who both finished in 24:58 with Scheller nipping Stockard at the finish line.
