Maureen Newell was IUP's top finisher at the Spiked Shoe Invitational by placing 22nd

The IUP women's cross country team finished sixth and the men were seventh in a field of 14 teams at the Spiked Shoe Invitational hosted by Penn State Saturday.

The women finished with 182 points in the 6K race. Syracuse won the team title with 30 points, followed by the host Nittany Lions (45), Columbia (80), Kutztown (153) and Geneseo (162). Millersville was one spot behind IUP in seventh with 197 points.

In the men's 5.2-mile race, IUP posted a total of 225 points. Syracuse also won the men's competition with a perfect score of 15 points. The Orange were followed by Columbia (51), Penn State (83), Geneseo (121), Dickinson (132) and Millersville (213). Kutztown was 10th.

IUP was behind Millersville and Kutztown in both the men's and women's East Region rankings and should move up this week.

Maureen Newell was the top IUP woman, placing 22nd in a time of 23:06. The rest of the top five for the Crimson Hawks were Lindsey Scheller (24th, 23:08), Stacie Stockard (40th, 23:51), Rachel Buckley (46th, 24:07) and Emma Rybczynski (50th, 24:20).

The men were led by Nate Shelly, who finished 31st in a time of 27:43. Taking the next four spots for IUP were Sean Strauman (42nd, 28:27), Matt Gaudet (44th, 28:38), Josh Joson (52nd, 28:56) and Ben Havko (56th, 29:17).

IUP will host its own invitational next Saturday on the South Campus course beginning at 11 a.m.
