The men’s and women’s cross country teams both
emerged victorious in their first event of the 2007 season, taking top team
honors at the Davis & Elkins Mountain State Forest Festival Invitational on
Saturday.
The women led the nine-team field with 29
points, followed by West Virginia Wesleyan (54), Elizabethtown (93), Seton
Hill (98) and Alderson-Broaddus (125).
The IUP men had 63 points to beat seven other
teams. West Virginia Wesleyan was second (68), followed by Seton Hill (74),
Elizabethtown (81) and Davis & Elkins (115).
Erica Hoffman was the top IUP woman, finishing
third overall with a time of 24:29 in the 6K race. The Crimson Hawks took
spots five through eight behind the group of Maureen Newell (24:39), Laura
Blaesser (25:17), Stacie Stockard (25:19) and Marissa Butler (25:23).
Butler, a freshman, was making her college
debut, as was Kelly Best, who finished 17th in 26:12. Tatyana
Maltseva placed 19th in 26:16.
Nate Shelly led the IUP men with a second
place finish in 28:32 in the 8K race. Also finishing in the top 10 was
Bobby Boston, who took sixth in 29:21. Rounding out the IUP men’s top five
were Ben Shinsky (15th, 30:38), Kyle Hills (19th,
30:52) and Luke Snyder (22nd, 31:15).
IUP will host its own invitational next
Saturday on its South Campus course. The men run at 11 a.m., followed by
the women at noon.
