The IUP women’s cross country team edged
Slippery Rock by two points to win the Slippery Rock Invitational on
Saturday at Cooper’s Lake Campground.
The Crimson Hawks had 38 points to 40 for
Slippery Rock, winning the meet on the strength of four runners finishing in
the top 10. Following the top two teams were Grove City (55), Geneva (94)
and Allegheny (143).
The IUP men took third place with 83 points,
trailing Slippery Rock (18) and Grove City (69).
Erica Hoffman was the top IUP finisher, taking
fourth place with a time of 23:34 on the 6K course. Hoffman edged teammate
Maureen Newell, who was fifth in 23:59. Laura Blaesser (eighth, 24:30) and
Stacie Stockard (ninth, 24:35) also finished in the top 10.
Freshman Kelly Best turned in a 16th
place finish (25:15) that was a key to the IUP team championship. Another
freshman, Bridget Connolly, was 24th (25:59) and Tatyana Maltseva
was 27th (26:10).
Nate Shelly led the IUP men’s runners, placing
seventh in the 8K race with a time of 27:37. Bobby Boston was 15th
(28:30), Ben Shinsky was 23rd (29:05), Ben Havko was 31st
(29:58) and Chad Phares was 37th (30:21). The Crimson Hawks ran
without two of their top runners – Luke Snyder and Kyle Hills.
Both IUP teams are back in action next
Saturday at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
