Erica Hoffman Finishes Second to Lead IUP Women to Team Title at Carnegie Mellon Invitational (10/13/07)

The IUP women’s cross country team won its fourth meet of the season by taking first place at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday.

IUP finished with 53 points to top the 23-team field which included several Division I schools, including Pitt.  The Crimson Hawks outdistanced Baldwin-Wallace (76 points), George Washington (83), Geneva (134) and Robert Morris (160).

The IUP men were 10th in a field that included 25 teams.  Carnegie Mellon won the men’s meet.

Erica Hoffman was the top IUP woman, finishing second in the 5K race with a time of 18:47.  She was one of three Crimson Hawks who set a personal best time in the event.  Maureen Newell (fifth, 19:05) and Stacie Stockard (10th, 19:26) also set new personal standards.

Laura Blaesser was 11th (19:30), Tatyana Maltseva was 31st (20:10), Bridget Connolly was 36th (20:15) and Kelly Best was 50th (20:38).

Nate Shelly led the IUP men with a 47th place finish in a time of 27:20 over the 8K course.  He was followed by Bobby Boston (57th, 27:31), Ben Shinsky (72nd, 27:49), Chad Phares (89th, 28:10) and Luke Snyder (91st, 28:13).

IUP is off next Saturday before competing in the PSAC meet on October 27 at Kutztown.
