March 5, 2010 IUP fell behind 5-0 and 7-1 before a late rally fell short in a 7-5 loss to North Greenville in the opening game of a three-game series and eight-game spring break road trip. The Crimson Hawks dropped to 2-3 on the season. North Greenville won its ninth in a row and improved to 12-2. North Greenville ace Drew Provence allowed only three hits and one unearned run in seven innings. IUP scored twice in both the eighth and ninth against the Crusader bullpen. IUP finished with six hits, including doubles by Jamie Smith and Vern Powell and an RBI single by Robbie Zinsmeister. The Crimson Hawks also scored on RBI infield grounders by Roland Thiele, Mark Woleslagle and Paul Bingham. The Crusaders scored single runs off IUP starter Corey Betz (1-1) in the first and third before opening up a 5-0 lead on a two-out, three-run homer by Adam Taylor in the fourth. Betz allowed six hits and struck out three in four innings. The IUP bullpen of Tyler Squibbs, Craig Hibell and Stephen Cooke combined for four innings and surrendered only five hits and two runs - one earned - with four strikeouts and no walks. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday at noon. IUP also has twinbills at Limestone on Monday and Brevard on Tuesday and a single game at Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday. |
