Roland Thiele had four hits including a home run and drove in five runs and Pat Smith earned saves in both games to lead IUP to a doubleheader sweep of Mount Aloysius by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 Sunday in Cresson.

Thiele and Dylan Songer both hit home runs in the first game to back the four-hit pitching of Travis Bobik, Josh Hildebrand and Smith. Bobik allowed two hits and three runs, only one of them earned, and struck out four in four innings to earn the win and improve to 2-0.

Hildebrand surrendered an unearned run in one inning of work and Smith pitching the final two innings, giving up one hit while holding Mount Aloysius off the scoreboard.

IUP (20-22) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but trailed 3-2 heading into the fifth. The Crimson Hawks erased that deficit when T.J. Nichols doubled and Thiele hit a two-out homer to put IUP in front 5-3. Songer homered to lead off the sixth and Thiele added an RBI single in the seventh.

Chris Douglas earned the win in the second game, allowing six hits and two runs with three strikeouts in five innings on the mound. Smith came in with one out in the sixth and retired all five batters he faced for his second save of the day and third of the season.

Smith has been on the IUP roster all season but his work on the mound has been limited due to his role as the No. 2 quarterback on the Crimson Hawk football team, which wrapped up spring practice on Friday.

IUP jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first, taking advantage of a bases loaded walk, a run scoring ground out, a passed ball and an RBI single by Thiele.

After Mount Aloysius cut its deficit in half in the fourth, the Crimson Hawks tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh when Jamie Smith singled, his third hit of the game, and scored on a ground out by Shane Melhorn. Lee Bainbridge drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly.

IUP is scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Owen Dougherty Field versus Fairmont State Tuesday, weather permitting.
