IUP women's basketball player Kylie Miller and baseball player Ryan Mostyn were named the IUP Scholar-Athletes of the Year Thursday night at the university's annual All-American Dinner at the Crimson Event Center. Miller, an elementary education major from Pine-Richland High School, has a grade point average of 3.83 through the fall of 2008, including a 4.0 her junior and senior years, and has been on the Dean's List each semester. She is currently doing her student teaching at East Pike Elementary School in Indiana. A three-time team captain, she has helped lead IUP to a record of 96-29 and three consecutive PSAC championships and berths in the NCAA tournament. Miller is one of only 18 players in school history to score 1,000 points, finishing her career with a total of 1,011, and also ranks fourth in 3-point field goals made with 101, eighth in steals with 203 and 10th in assists with 303. During the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years, Miller was a two-sport athlete, having also competed on the lacrosse team. She was second team All-PSAC both seasons and ranks in the top five in school history in goals with 83, assists with 41 and points with 124. Miller has been extremely active in the community during her four years at IUP, participating in several public service activities including a lead role in the Susan G. Komen Shoot for the Cure Classic that raises money for breast cancer research and education. Mostyn, a business marketing major from Philipsburg-Osecola High School, has a GPA of 3.93 through the fall of 2008 and has earned a 4.0 GPA in five of his seven semesters. He is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, a recipient of the PSAC Top Ten Award last spring and an IUP Provost Scholar. Mostyn is in his second season as a team captain and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He attended the 2008 NCAA National Student-Athlete Leadership Development Conference in Orlando and is featured prominently among the top students in the Eberly College of Business. On the field, Mostyn helped lead IUP to its finest season in nearly two decades in 2008. In a 36-19 season that included the team's first berth in the PSAC playoffs in 10 years, he batted .313 with nine doubles, four triples, five home runs, 29 runs scored and 30 runs batted in. On Sunday, Mostyn tied the school career record by playing in his 166th game. Among Mostyn's community service projects include work with the Hearts for the Hungry, United Way events at the Indiana Regional Medical Center and Café 701, Indi Kids Day of Play, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk, IUP baseball camps and Co-op Store promotions at home football games. |
