Darryl Webb scored 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the floor to lead four IUP players in double figures and the Crimson Hawks at least temporarily moved into sole possession of first place in the PSAC West with a 72-65 win Saturday at Mercyhurst. The Crimson Hawks completed a season sweep of the Lakers in their first season in the PSAC and improved to 19-4 overall and 8-2 in the division. IUP is a half game ahead of Gannon pending the Golden Knights game at Clarion Saturday night. Slippery Rock knocked Edinboro out of a share of the lead with a 96-90 victory over the Fighting Scots. Ashton Smith followed Webb with14 points and added five steals. Thomas Young and Gerald Brooks scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, and both had a team-high nine rebounds. Young also dished out four assists. Nnamdi Nnadili led Mercyhurst with 19 points and Elliot Engelmann added 16. The Lakers dropped to 15-8 and 3-7 in the PSAC West. IUP led 38-29 at halftime and scored the first seven points of the second half, including a dunk by Young to get the run started, to build the Crimson Hawk advantage to 45-29. IUP still led 60-49 after a 3-point play by Smith with 6:38 to play before Mercyhurst began chopping into its deficit. The Lakers went on a 9-2 run to get within 62-58 with 2:17 remaining and then used a pair of free throws by Anthony Terry with just under a minute left to get as close as 66-63. But Brooks made four from the line and Smith added two more over the final 45 minutes to keep Mercyhurst from finishing the comeback. IUP returns home following a two-game road trip when it hosts California Wednesday at 7:30. The Crimson Hawks then visit Gannon for a game which should go a long way in determining supremacy in the PSAC West this season. |
