Gerald Brooks scored 21
points and Darryl Webb wrapped up his outstanding freshman season with 19
points and 10 rebounds but in the end it was a balanced Edinboro scoring
attack that gave the host Fighting Scots a 72-56 win in a PSAC quarterfinal
game.
Edinboro (23-5) moves on to
play Millersville in Friday's semifinals at Cheyney. The host Wolves
face California in the other semifinal.
IUP finishes its season
with a record of 13-15. The Crimson Hawks improved their win total by
seven from a year ago.
Gil Cummings led Edinboro
with 13 points, followed by Ryan McLemore with 11 and Gerald Warrick with
10. McLemore also had eight rebounds and eight blocks and set an NCAA
Division II record for single season blocks with 159.
Brooks hit 9 of 17 field
goal attempts and also had six rebounds for the Crimson Hawks. The
double-double for Webb was his ninth of the season.
IUP led for most of the
opening 13 minutes, building as much as a six-point cushion early in the
game. The Crimson Hawks took their final lead at 23-22 on a jumper by
Brooks with 7:21 left in the first half.
But after a 3-pointer by
Jordan Shaw made it a 26-26 game, the Fighting Scots scored the final 10
points of the period to take a 36-26 lead into halftime.
The game was never in doubt
in the second half, with Edinboro's lead never slipping below double figures
and reaching 25 with 5:37 remaining.
