A 1998 graduate of IUP and a three-year letterman on the football team, Jim Smith is in his 11th season on the coaching staff.

Smith is in charge of the quarterbacks while also coordinating the Crimson Hawk passing game. From 2002-05 he directed the IUP linebackers.

Smith has developed a passing attack that has produced some of the top numbers in that area in recent IUP history. In 2008, quarterback Andrew Krewatch completed 62.8 percent of his passes and had 22 touchdowns against only 10 interceptions. Along the way, he set a school career record for completions with 561 and is within striking distance of new records in yards and touchdowns.

For the second straight season, the Crimson Hawks averaged 38.5 points per game, tied for the second highest in school history. IUP led the PSAC in scoring offense and was second in total offense with an average of 442.1 yards per game.

Under Smith's tutelage, Krewatch set IUP season records with 237 completions, 391 attempts and 3,100 yards in 2007 while throwing 29 touchdown passes.

Smith was a part-time coach in 2000 and 2001 while also teaching at Latrobe High School. He mentored the IUP wide receivers in 2000 before coaching the running backs and serving as passing game coordinator the following year. Smith was also a member of the coaching staff during the 1998 campaign.

Smith lettered from 1994-96 as a wide receiver at IUP. During that time, he played in 18 games and caught 20 passes for 229 yards. After his playing days were over, Smith served as a student coach assisting with the wide receivers during spring practice in 1997.

He earned his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from IUP in 1998. Smith and his wife, Lori, are the parents of Trevor (3).
