Kareem Dutrieuille Scores Twice, Defense Limits Edinboro to Seven Points in 27-7 Win

October 13, 2007

Kareem Dutrieuille rushed for a career high 100 yards and scored two touchdowns and the IUP defense limited high-powered Edinboro attack to just seven points as the Crimson Hawks downed the Fighting Scots 27-7 in a PSAC West contest Saturday at Miller Stadium.

IUP, ranked third in the Northeast Region and 24th in the nation in the American Football Coaches Association poll, improved to 5-1 and 2-1 in the PSAC West. Edinboro saw its five-game winning streak come to an end, dropping to 5-2 and 2-1 in the conference.

The 100-yard game was the first of Dutrieuille's career and his 28 carries was also a career high. His previous top marks in both categories came when he rushed 20 times for 91 yards in the 2006 season opener at Cheyney. Dutrieuille's two touchdowns give him a team-best seven on the year.

Andrew Krewatch completed 18 of 23 passes for 207 yards and misfired on only one of nine attempts in the second half. Mychal Skinner led the IUP receivers with five for 39 yards, followed by Ken Witter with four for 60 and Dan Pickens with four for 59 and the touchdown.

Edinboro was averaging 43.3 points per game, the fifth highest mark in Division II, but found the end zone only once on a 40-yard pass from Trevor Harris to Rich Cerro with 10:47 left in the second quarter that cut IUP's lead at the time to 10-7.

Harris attempted a school-record 46 passes, completing 24 for 292 yards. Cerro had seven receptions for 102 yards while Jeremy Burr made six receptions for 80 yards. Harris was also the leading rusher for the Fighting Scots with eight carries for 65 yards, and Ulysee "Spud" Davis gained 51 yards on nine attempts.

IUP had built a 10-0 lead in the first quarter when Andrew Krewatch threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Dan Pickens with 8:07 remaining in the opening quarter to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive and a Matt McNelis 33-yard field goal on the final play of the first quarter, his sixth without a miss this season.

After the Edinboro touchdown, IUP extended its lead to 13-7 with 5:23 left before halftime when Craig Burgess kicked a 36-yard field goal. The McNelis and Burgess field goals make the duo 9 for 10 on the year.

IUP free safety Corey Sample turned in perhaps the biggest play of the game for the Crimson Hawks at the end of Edinboro's first possession of the third quarter.

After the Fighting Scots drove to the IUP10, Harris hit Denayne Dixon, who took the ball to the one. But Sample got a helmet on the ball at the end of the run, and Quinton Cobb recovered the fumble in the end zone to prevent Edinboro from taking the lead.

The Crimson Hawk offense responded by driving 80 yards on 10 plays and made the score 20-7 on Dutrieuille's first touchdown of the game from the one.

Two drives later, a pair of Krewatch completions of 23 yards to Anthony Cellitti and 14 yards to Pickens set up another one-yard scoring run by Dutrieuille that made it 27-7 with 8:34 left in the game.

Edinboro threatened one last time, marching 83 yards to the IUP two. But a fourth down pass from Harris to Cerro was broken up by Cobb with 1:24 remaining, and the Crimson Hawks ran out the clock.

Ken Evans led IUP with 10 tackles while Sample had seven and both broke up two passes. Mike Reid had three pass breakups for the Crimson Hawks. Former IUP player Y'Hoshua Murray led all tacklers with 12 for Edinboro, and Greg Sondag made 10 stops.
