Sept. 6, 2008 IUP scored on three plays of 74 or more yards in posting a 41-0 shutout over C.W. Post in the 2008 season opener Saturday at Hickox Field. The game was the PSAC debut for the Pioneers and marked the first meeting between the two teams since 1981. After Craig Burgess kicked a 26-yard field goal to give the Crimson Hawks a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, IUP exploded for three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 24-0 lead into halftime. Akwasi Owusu-Ansah got the scoring parade started with a 74-yard interception return just under two minutes into the quarter, marking the first such IUP touchdown since Garrett Majors brought back a Clarion interception 45 yards for a score in 2005. The Andrew Krewatch-to-Ken Witter combination which was so successful at the end of the 2007 season then picked up where they left off. The two hooked up for scoring aerials of 85 and 27 yards just 3:25 apart to cap the second quarter uprising. The 85-yard pass was the longest of both players' careers and is the fifth longest pass play in IUP history. Witter now has 44 catches for 630 yards and 10 touchdowns in his past five games dating back to last season. He had four catches for 142 yards against the Pioneers Saturday while Krewatch completed 13 of 25 passes for 241 yards. Tobias Robinson made a successful comeback after missing the entire 2007 season with a broken leg by rushing for 178 yards on only 14 carries. He gave the Crimson Hawks a 31-0 lead on IUP's first play from scrimmage in the third quarter on an 85-yard touchdown dash, the second longest running play in school history. Burgess kicked an 18-yard field goal and Justin Warren scored from one-yard out following a C.W. Post fumble to wrap up the scoring. IUP finished with 459 yards of total offense while the Pioneers had 331. Jason Gwaltney led C.W. Post with 83 rushing yards, and Nick Georgetti hit on 14 of 29 passes for 179 yards. Donta Green paced the Crimson Hawks with 11 tackles. He was followed in that department by Terrence Jackson with eight and Jermaine Smith and Myke Wells with seven each. Owusu-Ansah and Andre Henderson had interceptions for IUP. IUP plays at Millersville next Saturday at 1 p.m. in its second straight game against PSAC East opposition. C.W. Post hosts Edinboro Saturday at noon. |
