Sept. 13, 2008 IUP scored on nine of its 12 possessions, including three touchdown runs by Tobias Robinson and three Andrew Krewatch touchdown passes, and the defense came within 24.5 seconds of its second consecutive shutout in a 63-3 victory over Millersville Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium. IUP, ranked 13th in the American Football Coaches Association poll, improved to 2-0 while the Marauders dropped to 0-3 and have been outscored 108-3 by the Crimson Hawks the past two years. John Banzhof kicked a 35-yard field goal on Millersville's final possession to avoid the shutout. Including a 41-0 win in its opener at C.W. Post, IUP has outscored its first two opponents by a 104-3 margin, the biggest ever for any two-game span in school history. IUP piled up 634 yards of total offense, the second-highest total in school history, while limiting Millersville to 135 yards. The Crimson Hawks had a balanced attack, running for 293 yards and passing for 341. The record for most total yards in a game is 695 against Slippery Rock in 1994. Krewatch broke a school mark for completion percentage, hitting on 24 of 27 passes (88.9 percent) for 333 yards and touchdown hookups with Garrett Lestochi (11 yards), Ken Witter (11) and Nate Morrow (six), the latter coming on the redshirt freshman tight end's first career reception. Witter has 10 touchdown catches in his past six games dating back to last season. Robinson, who finished with 101 yards on 22 carries, had scoring runs of 18, five and seven yards in the second quarter to help stake the Crimson Hawks to a 35-0 halftime lead. Millersville had the first chance to score, driving to the IUP 12 on its first possession of the game before Andre Henderson picked off a Jamal Smith in the end zone. The IUP offense then started the onslaught with a 68-yard pass from Krewatch to Corey Kurtz to set up the Krewatch-to-Lestochi touchdown to give the Crimson Hawks the only touchdown they would need. Krewatch completed his first 10 passes for 137 yards, seeing the run end when he was picked off by Jerrod Bowling in the end zone early in the second quarter. But that just temporarily stopped the offense from lighting up the scoreboard. A 49-yard pass to Mychal Skinner got the ball deep in Millersville territory, and two Robinson touchdown runs were called back by holding. But the third time proved to be the charm as an 18-yard run held up and IUP led 14-0. A 31-yard pass to Roy-al Edwards and a 42-yard run by Edwards on a reverse put IUP in position to add two more Robinson touchdown runs that made it 28-0. A bad snap on a Marauder punt attempt produced the Witter touchdown catch and the 35-point halftime margin. After Quinton Cobb picked off a pass by backup quarterback Bill Shirk at the Millersville 38, a scrambling Krewatch found Morrow in the end zone to make it 42-0. Justin Warren then got in on the act, tearing off touchdown runs of 20 and 89 yards, the latter coming on the final play of the third quarter and marking the second-longest scoring run in school history. The 89-yard run topped an 85-yard scoring romp by Robinson against C.W. Post in the season opener last week. The only run from scrimmage longer in IUP history was a 93-yarder by Michael Mann against Shippensburg in 1991. Warren had a total of 134 rushing yards on nine carries, an average of 14.9 per attempt. Abe Satterfield made the third interception of the game for IUP and returned it 37 yards, with Garrett Lestochi going in from five yards out to round out the Crimson Hawk scoring. Craig Burgess added his ninth extra point, eclipsing the former school record of eight accomplished four times. Nate George led the IUP defense with eight tackles, one more than Terrence Jackson. Cobb had two tackles for loss in addition to his interception and excelled on kick coverage IUP plays its home and PSAC West opener next Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest against Lock Haven. Millersville opens PSAC East play with a 6 p.m. contest at West Chester. |
