The Crimson Hawks shot the best team score of the second round of the IUP-Cecil Spadafora Invitational Tuesday at the Indiana Country Club but fell eight shots shy of champion Concord and one behind runner-up Clarion. IUP shot a two-under par score of 286 in the final round and finished at 585. The Crimson Hawks made up two shots on both Concord and Clarion but it was not enough for IUP to repeat as the champion of its own tournament. Rounding out the top 10 in the 17-team field were St. Francis (590), Millersville (591), California (597), St. Vincent (604), Allegheny (605), West Chester (612) and West Virginia Wesleyan (618). Gavin Smith was the top individual for the Crimson Hawks, tying for sixth with a three-over par score of 145. Ryan Kennedy and Brad Boyle tied for eighth at 146, Cory Stelick tied for 18th at 148 and Leo Acklin tied for 37th at 154. Boyle shot a second round score of 68, tied for the lowest round of the tournament. Joe Pelland competed as an individual for IUP and shot a 151. Clarion's Jared Schmader won medalist honors at three-under par 139, finishing one shot ahead of Andrew Mehler of Concord and Darryn DeShong of Millersville. Schmader, Mehler and DeShong all joined Boyle with rounds of 68. IUP competes next May 4-6 at the NCAA Super Regional tournament at Daniels, W.Va. |
