Gavin Smith Wins Medalist Honors to Lead IUP to Title at IUP-Cecil Spadafora Invitational

Gavin Smith blistered the Indiana Country Club course for a score of six-under par 65 to wrap up medalist honors and lead IUP to the team title at the IUP-Cecil Spadafora Invitational.

Smith finished with a two-day total of five-under par 137 to defeat Jeff Varga of St. Vincent by three shots. Those two players were the only two who came in under par for the 36-hole tournament.

Smith, the reigning PSAC Rookie of the Year and individual champion at the conference tournament in October, won his fourth tournament this season. The Crimson Hawks won a team championship for the first time this spring and fourth time overall including the fall season.

IUP had a team score of 576 to post a 10-stroke victory over West Liberty State in the 12-team field. Millersville was another three shots back at 589.

Rounding out the team standings were Clarion (594), Concord (595), Duquesne (602), California (604), Allegheny and St. Vincent (604), West Chester (633), West Virginia Wesleyan (638) and Seton Hill (662).

Two other Crimson Hawks placed in the top 10. Cory Stelick, who was tied for first after the opening round, finished tied for seventh with a score of 145. Ryan Kennedy, who was also part of the first place tie following Monday's round, tied for ninth at 146.

Leo Acklin tied for 17th with a score of 150 while Nic Milito tied for 48th at 159. Joe Pelland and Joey Reed, both competing as individuals, had identical scores of 160.

IUP competes next at the St. Vincent Invitational Thursday in Latrobe.
