IUP won its first golf tournament of the fall season, using a tiebreaker to edge host Ohio Valley at the Burger King/Ohio Valley Invitational which wrapped up Tuesday in Vienna, W.Va.

The Crimson Hawks and Fighting Scots both had scores of 597 at the end of the second and final round. The tiebreaker used was the score of the No. 5 player on both teams. IUP's Brad Boyle shot a 160 while Ohio Valley's Joe Viner came in at 166.

IUP and Ohio Valley edged Clarion by five shots. The Crimson Hawks trailed the Golden Eagles by six shots after the opening round before firing a 292 on Tuesday, 11 shots better than Clarion.

Senior Gavin Smith, the reigning NCAA Division II national champion and two-time PSAC Player of the Year, was the top scorer for IUP. He had scores of 72 and 71 to finish at three-over par 143 and tie Paul Raines of Ohio Valley for second, two shots behind Clarion's Jared Schmader.

Ryan Kennedy finished alone in sixth place with a score of 149. Nic Milito tied for 17th at 154 and Leo Acklin tied for 22nd at 156. Acklin struggled to an 86 on Monday but rebounded for a 70 on Tuesday, tied for the best 18-hole score of the tournament.

IUP is back in action September 13-14 at the Hal Hansen Invitational hosted by Clarion.
