In a showdown between a
pair of former IUP golfers, Dan Thompson edged Sean Knapp on the second
playoff hole to claim the championship of the 103rd West Penn Open on
Tuesday at the Nemacolin Woodlands Golf Club in Uniontown.
Thompson
(right) and Knapp matched rounds of 70 and 69 to take 5-under par scores
into the playoff. On the second hole of the playoff, Thompson recorded
a par while Knapp bogeyed to give Thompson the title.
Thompson had rallied from a
three-shot deficit after Knapp birdied five of his first 10 holes during the
second round. His comeback was highlighted by an eagle at the 16th
hole and a key par save at No. 18 to force the playoff.
Thompson was an
all-conference and all-region player at IUP in 2004 and 2005 after
transferring from Potomac State. He is currently the second assistant
pro at the Indiana Country Club.
Knapp, a 2001 inductee into
the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame, was seeking his eighth West Penn title.
He graduated from IUP in 1984.
