The IUP men’s golf team took the championship
at its first tournament of the fall season, winning the Burger King/Ohio
Valley Invitational held at the Woodridge Plantation Golf Club.
IUP sophomore Gavin Smith, the PSAC Rookie of
the Year last season, won the individual title in a playoff over Matt Hicks
of West Liberty State. Smith and Hicks tied at three-under par 139 on the
par 71 course, with Smith firing a 68 on Saturday, and both players parred
the 18th hole, the first of a sudden death playoff.

Smith then parred 18 again and Hicks posted a
triple bogey to give Smith medalist honors. Nic Milito was tied for third
at 140, one shot behind the leaders. Ryan Kennedy tied for 11th
(144), Cory Stelick tied for 32nd (150), Leo Acklin tied for 36th
(151) and Joe Reed tied for 47th (153).
As a team, Crimson Hawks shot a score of 573
to outdistance runner-up West Liberty State by six strokes in the two-day
event. Fairmont State and host Ohio Valley were another six shots back at
585 in a tie for third. Rounding out the top five in the 19-team field were
Charleston and Clarion, which tied for fifth at 594.

Other competing PSAC schools were
Millersville, which tied for eight at 600, and California, which finished 12th
at 605.
IUP will compete next Sunday and Monday at the
Hal Hansen Memorial hosted by Clarion.
