Sarah Pastorek scored 22 points, Eryn Withers had her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds and IUP took advantage of a poor shooting night by Edinboro to defeat the Fighting Scots 58-52 in a PSAC West game Wednesday at Memorial Field House. The Crimson Hawks improved to 12-7 overall and finished the first half of conference play with a 5-2 record, putting them in third place behind only nationally ranked Gannon and California. Edinboro dropped to 12-8 and 3-4 in the PSAC West. Brianna Johnson added 10 points to give IUP three players in double figures. Kelsey Conklin led the Fighting Scots with 13 points, and Renee Brown had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds despite missing 16 of 19 field goal attempts. Edinboro's Samantha Reimer, who entered the game ranked third in the PSAC in scoring at 19.3 points per game, missed all 12 of her shots and finished with just five points. Pastorek, coming off her first career double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds versus Slippery Rock on Saturday to earn PSAC West Freshman of the Week honors, continued her outstanding play in Wednesday's game. She hit 6 of 11 from the field and 10 of 12 from the free throw line while adding nine rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of steals. In seven conference games, Pastorek is averaging 12.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing. Edinboro shot only 21.5 percent from the field and went 0 for 12 from 3-point distance in losing to IUP for the ninth time in the past 11 meetings. The Fighting Scots missed 25 of their first 27 shots and shot only 16.2 percent in the first half but trailed only 25-20 at the break. Edinboro tied the game three times in the second half, the last time at 43 on a layup by Micki Cerchiaro with 6:15 remaining. But the Crimson Hawks took control once and for all less than a minute later when Withers drilled a 3-pointer to give IUP a 46-43 lead. Samantha Blazetic, who blocked five of Edinboro's 10 rejections in the game, made it a one-point game with a basket, but IUP ran off the next six points including two free throws each by Johnson and Pastorek and a layup by Lacey Claar. At the end of the surge, the Crimson Hawks led by seven with 3:46 left. IUP is back on the road Saturday to begin the second part of the PSAC West round robin schedule. The Crimson Hawks travel to Clarion and will be looking for a season sweep, having defeated the Golden Eagles 72-65 in the division opener at Memorial Field House on January 13. |
