Stats

IUP saw its shot at an undefeated field hockey season come to an end Saturday with a 2-1 defeat at Mercyhurst. The Crimson Hawks lost for the first time in 14 games and seven in the PSAC West.

IUP scored its only goal with 8:35 remaining in the first half when Brittany Owens scored her team-leading 14th of the season, assisted by Jess Frantz on a penalty corner. Mercyhurst (8-8, 3-3) had taken a 1-0 lead with 18:02 gone in the half on a goal by Serena Slattery.

The game remained tied until midway through the second half when Megan Rassmussen took a feed from Emily Warren and beat IUP goalkeeper Lydia Dolly. The lead held up despite the Crimson Hawks holding a 17-8 advantage in shots and 14-6 in penalty corners.

Dolly made two saves for IUP while Jennifer Coleman stopped nine shots for the Lakers.

IUP, ranked No. 1 in the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Mansfield next Saturday.
