After a scoreless opening half, IUP scored
three times after intermission to post a 3-0 victory over Merrimack in a
non-conference field hockey game Sunday afternoon at Miller Stadium.
IUP
(2-1), playing its first home game of the season, got second half goals
from Sylvia Guerrieri, Brittany Owens (pictured) and Liz Martini to
finally pull away from the Warriors (0-2). Merrimack stayed in the game
largely on the strength of goalie Amy Larrabee, who turned away 15 shots
in the contest.
IUP outshot Merrimack, 12-0, in the first
half but Larrabee made seven saves in the period to keep the Crimson
Hawks off the scoreboard. The second half was more of the same, with
IUP taking 12 shots to none for the Warriors, but three of them found
their mark.
Guerrieri scored her first goal of the
season with just 1:37 expired after the break off an assist by Jess
Frantz to give IUP the only goal it would need. Nine minutes later,
Owens found the cage for the third time this year, with Martini credited
with the assist.
Martini rounded out the scoring with 47
seconds remaining on a penalty corner pass from Owens. IUP took 14
penalty corners in the game compared to only one for Merrimack.
IUP stays home for a Monday game against
Bellarmine beginning at noon.
