Liz Martini scored four goals to tie the
IUP school record, offsetting an early 1-0 deficit as the Crimson Hawks
downed defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Bloomsburg, 5-1, on
Tuesday at Miller Stadium.
IUP improved to 6-1 and 3-0 in the PSAC
with its fifth straight win. The loss ended Bloomsburg’s 28-game
winning streak, and the Huskies dropped to 4-1 and 2-1 in the
conference.
The Crimson Hawks also gained a measure of
revenge after losing, 2-0, to Bloomsburg in the national semifinals last
November.
Martini
(pictured) matched the record of four goals in a game established by
Suzanne Cornelissen against Slippery Rock on September 25, 2004. Each
of Martini’s goals came off penalty corner assists by Brittany Owens,
including the first with 3:36 left in the first half that gave IUP a 2-1
lead it would never relinquish.
The Owens-to-Martini connection worked
three more times in the second half as the Crimson Hawks raced away from
the Huskies. Martini now has seven goals on the season to lead the team
after also pacing the Crimson Hawks in that department with 15 a year
ago.
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead midway through
the first half on a goal by Brieann Wolfe, assisted by Jamie
Vanartsdalen. The Huskies maintained the advantage until there was 6:29
left in the opening half when Barbara Heemelaar found the cage on an
assist by Jessica Velgos.
IUP held a 17-12 advantage in shots while
Bloomsburg had eight penalty corners to seven for the Crimson Hawks.
However, the Huskies were unable to capitalize on any of those scoring
chances.
Lydia Dolly made eight saves in goal for
IUP. Allison Ziants stopped 10 shots before giving way to Caitlin
Koczynski following the fourth Crimson Hawk tally.
IUP remains home on Saturday for another
PSAC game against Kutztown beginning at 1 p.m.
