Playing its first game as the No. 1-ranked
team in the country, the IUP field hockey team posted a 7-0 shutout over
host Slippery Rock in a PSAC contest on Wednesday.
Jess Frantz scored three goals for the
second time this season and Liz Martini added two goals and an assist to
lead the Crimson Hawks, who improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC.
IUP moved into the top spot in the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll earlier this week,
largely on the strength of its 5-1 win over previously No. 1 and
defending national champion Bloomsburg last Tuesday.
Liz Marosky and Wendy Strohl also scored
goals and Barbara Heemelaar had four assists in the easy win over The
Rock. Jessica Velgos and Kacie Klotz added assists. IUP held a 30-1
advantage in shots and took 18 penalty corners to none for Slippery
Rock.
Frantz, who also scored three goals in a
win at East Stroudsburg on September 5, got the Crimson Hawks on the
scoreboard with 31:10 remaining in the first half. Less than a minute
later, Marosky scored to give IUP a 2-0 lead, and the Crimson Hawks went
on to build a 6-0 lead by halftime.
Frantz scored her second and third goals
in a span of 4:31 midway through the first half and now has seven on the
season, two fewer than team leader Martini. Heemelaar’s four assists
gives her six on the year to tie Brittany Owens for the team lead.
Martini has five assists.
IUP begins a four-game homestand on
Saturday with a 7 p.m. game against Millersville.
