Barbara Heemelaar scored the first goal of
the game to give IUP a 1-0 lead and assisted on an insurance goal in the
second half as the Crimson Hawks posted a tougher than expected 2-1 win
over Millersville in a PSAC contest Saturday night at Miller Stadium.
The top-ranked Crimson Hawks improved to
8-2 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC. Millersville is 2-7 and 1-5 in
the conference. IUP held an 18-2 advantage in shots, but Marauder
goalie Jessica Heckman kept her team in the game with nine saves.
Heemelaar scored her third goal of the
season midway through the first half and it stayed that way until the
closing minutes. With 7:06 left in the game, Heemelaar fed Jessica
Velgos, who scored her first goal of the year to give IUP some breathing
room.
The assist was Heemelaar's team-leading
seventh of the season. She had four in IUP's last game on
Wednesday at Slippery Rock.
In addition to their domination in shots,
IUP took 15 penalty corners to only three for Millersville. Lydia
Dolly made one save in goal for the Crimson Hawks.
IUP remains home for a pair of games next
week, hosting Shippensburg on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and East Stroudsburg on
Saturday at 1 p.m.
