Liz Martini and Jess Frantz scored one minute apart
early in the second half to break a scoreless tie and propel IUP to its
fifth straight win, a 2-0 victory over Mansfield Tuesday at Miller
Stadium.
IUP improved to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in the PSAC and
keeps the Crimson Hawks in a first place tie with Bloomsburg, one half
game ahead of Kutztown.
IUP travels to Bloomsburg on Saturday and will be
looking for a season sweep after a 5-1 win over the Huskies on September
11 at Miller Stadium, a loss that ended Bloomsburg's 28-game winning
streak.
The Crimson Hawks held a 13-4 advantage in shots in
the first half and had seven penalty corners but were thwarted by six
saves by Mansfield goalie Brianna DeLuca.
IUP finally found the cage with 3:40 gone in the
second half when Martini scored her team-leading 12th goal of the
season. One minute later, Frantz scored for the ninth time this
year and the Crimson Hawks were never threatened.
IUP had 22 shots to only four for Mansfield and took
13 penalty corners compared to only three for the Mounties. DeLuca
finished with 12 saves, and Lydia Dolly had two stops in the first half
for the Crimson Hawks.
Dolly has nine shutouts among her 11 wins this
season, and IUP has not allowed a goal in its last three games.
