IUP saw its nine-game winning streak come
to an end against the same team it will play in the opening round of the
PSAC playoffs on Friday at Miller Stadium.
The Crimson Hawks fell in overtime at
Shippensburg by a score of 3-2 to finish the regular season at 15-3
overall and 12-2 in the PSAC. IUP and Shippensburg (12-7, 7-7)
will play in the second semifinal match at Miller Stadium on Friday at 4
p.m.
The first semifinal will feature
Bloomsburg vs. Kutztown. Both teams finished 11-3 in the PSAC, but
the Huskies will be the No. 2 seed on the strength of two wins over the
Golden Bears during the season.
The winners of the two semifinal matches
will play on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the PSAC championship. IUP had
clinched the regular season title and the host role for the tournament
with its win at Millersville on Wednesday.
In Saturday's loss to the Red Raiders, IUP
fell behind 2-0 on goals by Jamie Doughty and Danielle Haas before
rallying to tie the game.
Jess Velgos scored 23 seconds after the
Haas goal to bring the Crimson Hawks to within 2-1 with 4:19 left in the
first half. With 7:49 expired after intermission, Sylvia Guerrieri
tied it up. Barbara Heemelaar assisted on both IUP goals.
It stayed even until there was 4:32 left
in the first overtime when Kim Davies scored the winning goal for the
Red Raiders.
Lydia Dolly made four saves for IUP while
Amanda Houser stopped eight shots for Shippensburg. The Crimson
Hawks held a 14-9 edge in shots and 8-6 in penalty corners.
