IUP senior lacrosse player
Mallory Zelawski has been named as a recipient of the PSAC Top 10 award for
the spring sports season. The spring Top 10 recognizes five men and five
women in the sports of baseball, softball, lacrosse, outdoor track and
field, tennis and golf.
To
be eligible for the award, which is chosen by conference sports information
directors, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point
average of 3.25 and be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic
credentials. The Top 10 award winners in the fall, winter and spring are
candidates for the Pete Nevins Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Zelawski, a graduate of
Clarence (N.Y.) High School, maintained a 4.0 GPA as an earth and space
science education major. She will graduate summa cum laude in December and
attend graduate school for a master's degree in geology. Zelawski then
plans to pursue her doctorate and become a college professor or a field
geologist.
During her undergraduate
career at IUP, Zelawski has served as the president of the Geoscience Club,
worked with Habitat for Humanity and earned membership in the Delta Epsilon
Iota Honors Society. She has received the Battalion Commander's Award for
ROTC and was an IUP Provost Scholar and PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
Zelawski has also
performed community service work for the Girl Scouts, the Indiana County
Humane Society and the Salvation Army and was a tutor for astronomy,
geoscience and mathematics. She also completed an internship with the New
York State United Teachers in Williamsville, N.Y.
On
the lacrosse field, Zelawski was named second team All-PSAC for the 2007
season after finishing third on the Crimson Hawks in goals (43), assists
(17) and points (60). She scored 41 of her goals, including two-game
winners, in PSAC contests, and set a school record with 12 points on seven
goals and five assists in a win over Millersville. She also had five goals
vs. Lock Haven and Slippery Rock and four goals and four assists vs. East
Stroudsburg.
Zelawski was named the
PSAC Player of the Week for the final week of the 2007 campaign after
scoring a total of 13 goals vs. Millersville, West Chester and Lock Haven.
In her career, she played in 62 games, tied for the third most in school
history, and ranks third in the IUP record book in goals (106) and points
(144) while placing fourth in assists with 38.
She helped lead the
Crimson Hawks to one of its finest seasons in the 10-year history of IUP
lacrosse. IUP had an overall record of 7-10, one shy of the most wins in a
single season, and a 6-8 slate in the PSAC. IUP had won only six conference
games combined in the first nine years of the program.
