IUP saw its hold on fourth place and a spot in the PSAC playoffs grow a little more tenuous on Saturday with a 4-2 loss at Mercyhurst. The Crimson Hawks lost for the third straight time and dropped to 11-7 overall and 7-5 in the PSAC West. With 21 points in the division, IUP is just one ahead of California for the fourth and final playoff berth. IUP has games remaining at Clarion on Wednesday and home versus second place Gannon on Saturday. IUP could not finish off the season sweep of Mercyhurst after defeating the Lakers for the first time in school history on September 13. Mercyhurst scored four consecutive goals after the Crimson Hawks had taken the lead on a Viann Heder goal 16:36 into the game. Heder also assisted on the second IUP goal, feeding Melissa Leszek in the game's final minute. Allison Keller added an assist for the Crimson Hawks. Kelly Brennan played the first 81:21 in goal for IUP and made five saves. April Hunsberger made one save in 8:39 of action. Mercyhurst held a huge 26-7 advantage in shots. |
