Tournament MVP Sarah Powell scored both Mercyhurst goals and the Lakers held on for a 2-1 victory over IUP to claim the PSAC women's soccer championship in their first season in the conference.

IUP, seeking the third PSAC title in the 15-year history of its women's soccer program, dropped to 13-9-1 on the season and must wait until Monday to see if its run to the conference title game was good enough to earn a berth in the NCAA tournament.

Mercyhurst earned the automatic bid from the PSAC and will take a 13-4-4 record into NCAA tournament, which gets under way Friday at campus sites.

Sarah Romasco scored the only goal for IUP, redirecting a shot from Kyra Hricik past Laker goalkeeper Rebecca Heintzman with 5:03 remaining in the game. The goal was the team-leading 16th of the season for Romasco and 57th in her three-year career, two behind Erin Falce's school record.

Powell's two goals give her 21 on the year. She gave Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead with 14:26 gone in the first half, blasting a 30-yard shot past Kelly Brennan. Christine Rehnert assisted on the goal. Powell provided the eventual margin of victory with 12:33 left off a feed from Heather Donovan.

Brennan made four saves in 80:04 of playing time before being relieved by April Hunsberger, who stopped one shot in 9:56. Heintzman made three saves for Mercyhurst. The Lakers held an 18-10 advantage in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.
