The IUP women's soccer team has earned a berth in the NCAA tournament and will begin postseason play Friday with a noon contest versus Gannon at West Chester.
The Crimson Hawks are making their third appearance in the NCAA tournament and first since 2006. IUP has a record of 13-6-1 and are the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic Region while Gannon is seeded fifth with a record of 10-7-1 and is in the field of 48 for the first time in school history.
The winner of Friday's first round game will play host West Chester Sunday at noon. The Golden Rams (19-1-1) were awarded the top seed in the Atlantic Region after winning the PSAC championship for the third time in the past four seasons last weekend.
In the other Atlantic Regional bracket, third-seeded California (16-5-1) will play No. 6-seed West Virginia Wesleyan (13-6-1) in the opening round Friday. The winner of that game will play No. 2-seed Kutztown (15-5-2) Sunday.
The winners of the two brackets advance to the third round November 20 at a site to be determined following this weekend's action.
The Crimson Hawks have an all-time record of 1-2 in the NCAA tournament. In 2004, IUP made its postseason debut and dropped a 2-0 decision to Adelphi in Southampton, N.Y. Two years later, IUP defeated New Haven 3-1 in the opening round before losing 4-1 to West Chester.
IUP won both meetings with Gannon during the regular season, blanking the Golden Knights 4-0 in Erie on September 5 and pulling out a 3-2 victory at home on October 6.
The Crimson Hawks also defeated Gannon 1-0 in the opening round of last season's PSAC tournament and hold a 10-7 lead in the all-time series.
