Game 1 boxscore and play-by-play Game 2 boxscore and play-by-play Erin Holloway and Jenny Shaffer combined to allow only one run and six hits to pitch IUP to a doubleheader sweep over Clarion and force a coin toss to determine whether the Crimson Hawks will advance to next week's PSAC tournament. IUP won by scores of 4-0 and 4-1 to finish in a third place tie with Mansfield in the PSAC Central with 6-10 division records. The two teams split their four games and had identical records versus Lock Haven, Bloomsburg and Clarion, the other three teams in the division. With all on-field tiebreakers exhausted, a coin toss will be held Monday between the Crimson Hawks and Mountaineers with the winner advancing to the playoffs. Holloway allowed only one hit and struck out six in the game one win. After spotting Clarion a 1-0 lead in the second, the Crimson Hawks tied it in the third on an RBI single by Kristen Tunno, one of her three hits in the game, and took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on a two-run homer by Megan McCormick, her sixth of the season. The Crimson Hawks added an insurance run in the seventh on a double by Jessie James, a wild pitch and ground out to third by Michelle Bivona. Meanwhile, Holloway retired the final 14 Clarion batters to finish off the complete game. Shaffer had a five-hit shutout and was backed by an 11-hit attack in the second game, with Alex Daughenbaugh contributing four hits and scoring two runs. The Crimson Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first on consecutive singles by Daughenbaugh, Marissa Leslie and Tunno, the latter driving in a run, and IUP added a run on an error later in the inning. The Crimson Hawks put up two more runs in the fifth on four straight base hits, including an RBI single by Tunno, and a fielder's choice off the bat of McCormick that plated IUP's final run of the game. Shaffer walked one and struck out two. Clarion got runners as far as second in four of the seven innings but stranded seven in the game. IUP will finish its regular season with a non-conference doubleheader versus Seton Hill Tuesday at Podbielski Field beginning at 2:30. Should the Crimson Hawks win the coin toss with Mansfield, they will begin PSAC tournament play Friday at Kutztown. |
