IUP freshman first baseman Megan McCormick has been selected the PSAC Central Player of the Week after a power display that saw her hit four home runs and drive in 13 for the Crimson Hawks during a six-game span. McCormick is the third IUP player to earn the PSAC weekly award this season. Catcher Sam Goettman was chosen twice and outfielder Alex Daughenbaugh once. McCormick had just six hits in 22 at bats for the week, but all six went for extra bases including the four home runs. She added a double and triple for a slugging percentage of .954 and also scored four times. She had her biggest game in a must-win situation versus Mansfield in the second game of a doubleheader Friday. With IUP facing elimination from the PSAC playoff race, McCormick went 3-for-5 with a triple and two home runs, driving in seven in a wild 10-inning, 16-12 victory. McCormick also hit a two-run homer versus nationally-ranked Bloomsburg earlier in the week and hit a two-run shot in a win over Clarion that started the Crimson Hawks on their way to a season-ending sweep of the Golden Eagles. For the season, McCormick played in 26 games with 22 starts, seeing action as the designated player early in the year before taking over at first base for the second half of the season. She batted .271 with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 22 RBIs. McCormick was second on the team in homers and third in RBIs and also handled 102 chances in the field with only two errors. Despite winning its last three division games, IUP were denied a spot in the PSAC playoffs after losing a coin toss to Mansfield. The Crimson Hawks and Mountaineers both finished 6-10 in the PSAC Central and could not break the tie with on-field results, necessitating the coin toss. IUP finished with a 19-19 overall record. |
