Chloe Pike went to a first-set tiebreaker before losing her singles semifinal match, and Pike and Emilia Osborne fell in the final four of the doubles draw at the PSAC individual tournament held this weekend at Shippensburg. Pike, the only non-California player in the women's singles semifinals, lost 7-6, 6-0 to second-seeded Axelle Fernandez. Pike trailed 5-4 in the opening set before breaking Fernandez to even the set but then had her serve broken while leading 6-5 to force the tiebreaker. Pike won three matches Saturday, including a victory over No. 3-seed Rohini Das of Kutztown, to advance to the semifinals. Fernandez went on to lose to teammate Alina Stanila 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match. In doubles, Pike and Osborne won two matches Saturday but dropped an 8-5 decision to the Mercyhurst duo of Kim Ezzo and Meghan Raynor Sunday. Ezzo and Raynor then lost to Nina Kowalski and Laurie Navarro of California 8-0 in the finals. After winning all four of its dual matches so far this fall with one match remaining versus Westminster Tuesday, the PSAC individual tournament continued to demonstrate IUP's resurgence in the conference in women's tennis. Pike and fellow freshman Katie Eaton combined to win five of seven singles matches, with Eaton winning twice Saturday to qualify for the quarterfinals, in addition to the success of the doubles team of Pike and Osborne. The Crimson Hawks were one of only two schools to have athletes in the semifinals in both draws. |
