Mike Sobota (McMurray, Pa.) posted an individual score of 73 on the Chestnut Ridge Golf Course at the Chestnut Ridge Golf Resort in Blairsville, Pa., on Saturday, August 18 to win the individual title of the IUP Baseball/Volleyball Golf Outing. Team honors went to Sobota, Mike Meyer, Chris Nagle and Aaron Cook, whose foursome scored a three-under 68 in the best ball format. Sobota and Meyer both played baseball at IUP for four years (1985-1988) and Sobota was also a 2005 inductee into the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame. Nagle played baseball at IUP for two seasons (1986-87). Other winners included Sobota for “Closest to the Pin” on No. 3 and No. 17; Craig Siewert (York, Pa.) for “Closest to the Pin” on No. 9; Terry McCue (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for “Closest to the Pin” on No. 12; and Anthony Zambotti (Shelocta, Pa.) sank the longest putt on No. 18. Zambotti played baseball at IUP for four years (2000-03) and was a 14th round draft by the Oakland A's in 2003. Siewert is the father of IUP freshman volleyball player Tessa Siewert. Mark Arbuckle Nissan sponsored a hole-in-one contest on the par three No. 15, with a new Nissan car as the prize. Although there was not a hole-in-one, Sobota gave the group of people gathered at the tee box a moment of anticipation as his tee shot landed four feet from the pin and came to rest within two feet of the hole.
