Boxscore

Chris Douglas (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan) worked six solid innings and was backed by a 14-hit attack, giving IUP a 7-5 win over Bloomsburg to move to 2-0 in the PSAC tournament at Point Stadium in Johnstown.

The Crimson Hawks, the fourth seed out of the PSAC West, have knocked off a pair of higher-seeded teams in the opening two days of the tournament after surprising No. 1 Millersville in their first game Wednesday.

IUP (21-27) will play its next game at 3:30 Friday against the winner of tomorrow morning's game between Shippensburg and Bloomsburg. The Huskies, the third seed from the PSAC East, dropped to 22-20.

The Crimson Hawks have won two games in the PSAC tournament for the second straight season after going winless in conference tournament play since winning its most recent league title in 1990.

Douglas (6-4) worked a solid six innings, allowing five hits and two runs – one earned – while striking out six. His night ended when the game was delayed by lightning for 43 minutes in the top of the seventh, and three relievers pieced together the final three innings.

Cooke worked a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts before allowing three hits and three unearned runs in the eighth. Ryan Sylvia (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) took over with two outs and a runner on first in the eighth and allowed a single to Aaron Russell and fell behind in the count 2-0 to Keith Meyer. Christian Wolosik (Pittsburgh/North Catholic), the third pitcher of the inning, retired Meyer on a fly ball to shallow right.

Wolosik then set down the Huskies in order in the ninth, striking out Jerry Lloyd to end the game and earn the first save of his college career.

The Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second, bunching together seven hits including a two-run double by Dylan Songer (Baden/North Allegheny), an RBI two-base hit by Brett Quiggle (Weedville/St. Marys) and a single by Andrew Welch (DuBois, Pa./DuBois Central Catholic) that capped the scoring.

The inning could have been bigger but Welch was picked off first, Cory Sawka (Uniontown/Uniontown) was forced at third on an apparent single to left by Frank Sirlli and Vern Powell (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) was robbed of a hit with runners at second and third and two outs.

Bloomsburg reached Douglas for two runs in the top of the third before Douglas struck out a pair with two on and one out. Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown), who started off the big second inning with a single, doubled to begin the bottom of the third and scored on a triple by Songer to make it 5-2.

The Crimson Hawks added two more runs in the fifth to build a 7-2 cushion. Lupia began another scoring rally with a single, his third hit of the game, and moved to second when Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Welch reached on an error, leading to an infield hit by Sawka which plated Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown), and Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) also came across on a throwing error by second baseman Joey Ianiero.

Douglas retired the side in order in the sixth and IUP left two runners on base in the bottom of the inning before lightning was detected in the Johnstown area, forcing the delay.

Robbie Zinsmeister (Hatfield/North Penn) joined Mike Lupia (Middletown/Middletown) with three hits while Aaron Lupia (Middletown/Middletown), Songer and Sawka had two each.
