IUP Drops PSAC Quarterfinals Matchup to California

Box Score

CALIFORNIA, PA - The Crimson Hawks were unable to find the back of the net as California defeated IUP 1-0 in the quarterfinals of 2012 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Soccer Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Cal came out in full force having taken five shots in the early minutes of play.  During the whole first half Cal's defense only allowed IUP two shots to Cal's 10.  The Vulcans offense came up big when Janelle McCann found a hole in Mara Hricik (Moon Twp./Moon)'s position, putting the Vulcans up 1-0 in the 24th minute.

IUP's best offensive threat in the half came in the 26th minute with a corner attempt by Sharee McCarty (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley). Her nice pass set up a header attempt for Tonya Fabian (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) but her shot was saved by Cal goalie Ashley Magruda.

In the second half, the Vulcans had a couple of good chances to extend their lead with a pair of shots in the 79th minute of play but IUP keeper Mara Hricik (Moon Twp./Moon) made back-to-back saves to keep the Crimson Hawks deficit at one.

IUP's final good scoring chance didn't come again until the 88th minute when a foul by the Vulcans set up another header attempt, this one from Lindsay Lobevero (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott), but again Magruda came up with the save to secure the shutout victory.

The Crimson Hawks finished the year 9-6-4 and 6-5-3 in the PSAC West, earning a trip to the postseason for the ninth straight season. Senior Sharee McCarty (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) finishes her career with four goals and two assists in 65 games, starting 20. Fellow classmate Kelly Faller (Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) played in 24 career games scoring one goal.
