IUP Athletics Honors Student-Athletes at Annual All-American Banquet

INDIANA, PA - IUP Athletics honored 40 student-athletes at its annual All-American Banquet on Wednesday evening in the PNC Room at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex.

Among the 40 student-athletes honored were 13 All-Americans collected between the spring 2011 season through the winter of 2011-12.

The presentation of IUP's Scholar-Athletes also took place, as Ethan Robinson (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard) (men's basketball) and Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George) (women's swimming) were honored as the senior man and women with the highest cumulative grade point average.

Also honored on Wednesday night were 26 student-athletes who received top Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) individual honors, those who qualified and competed in individual national championships, and any all-region recipients since the 2011 spring season.

The master of ceremonies for the evening was Jack Benedict, the radio voice for the Crimson Hawks, who is celebrating his 50th year in broadcasting.

On hand to help present the scholar-athlete awards was IUP's interim president, Dr. David Werner.

Here are some of the highlights of IUP's All-Americans and Scholar-Athletes:

SOFTBALL


Erin Holloway (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton)
First Team All-America Selection, PSAC Central and Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year
- 27-5 overall record in 2011, one shy of her own school record in wins
- 1.50 ERA with 11 shutouts
- 247 strikeouts and just 59 walks
- 214 1/3 innings pitched and 31 complete games
- 6-0 record in PSAC Tournament
- 1,001 career strikeouts, just third player in PSAC History to reach 1,000 K plateau
- Ranks third in PSAC history in complete games (105) and innings pitched (810 2/3), fifth in wins (78) and sixth in shutouts (32)

Megan McCormick (Evans City/Seneca Valley)
Third Team All-American (Second consecutive season)
- Smacked a team-high 7 home runs and scored team-high 38 runs
- Led team in batting, averaging .397 with 15 walks
- Had three homers and 18 RBI in 2011 PSAC and Regional Championships
- Led the PSAC in RBI (53), ranked second in hits (60) and doubles (14), third in on-base percentage (.455) and total bases (97)
- IUP all-time career leader in runs batted in (153), doubles (45) and batting (.375)

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Nafee Harris
All-American in the Long Jump at 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships
- Finished second in the long jump with a leap of 25' 10”
- Jump was longest recorded in the PSAC during the spring
- Four-time national champion in the long jump at NCAA indoor and outdoor championships
- Won long jump titles at 2011 indoor championships; 2010 outdoor championships; 2010 indoor championships; 2009 outdoor championships

Leander Toney
All-American in High Jump at 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships
- Finished third in the high jump with a height of 7' 1”
- Broke one of oldest records in IUP history; Old mark of 7' 0” set by Stan Shockley in 1976
- He also holds the IUP indoor high jump record of 7' ½”
- Four-time All-American at NCAA championship meets
- Finished second in 2011 indoor championships; fourth in 2010 outdoor and four in 2010 indoor championships

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Brianna Liebold
All-American in the Long Jump at 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships
- Finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 19' 2 ¾”
- Three-time All-American at NCAA championship meets
- Finished sixth in long jump at 2011 NCAA indoor championship; Finished third in long jump at 2010 NCAA indoor championship
- Two-time PSAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year (2010, 2011) and 2011 PSAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year
-  Won both the long jump and triple jump at the 2011 PSAC outdoor championships, duplicating her effort from the winter in which she won both at the indoor championships

FOOTBALL

Grant Schallock (Webster, NC/Smoky Mountain)
Honorable Mention Don Hansen All-American Team
- First Team Don Hansen and Daktronics All-Region Selection
- First Team All-PSAC West Punter
- 41.1 yards per punt were best punting average in the PSAC in 2011
- Pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line 14 times
- Nine punts of over 50 yards, including a season-long of 59 yards

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Heather Robbins (Frederica, DE/Polytech)
NCAA Division II Capital One Academic All-America third team
- Daktronics All-Atlantic Region Second Team
- Health & Physical Education major with a 3.81 cumulative grade-point average
- Led the Crimson Hawks in goals (15) and total points (34) in 2011
- Robbins was fifth in the PSAC in goals and fourth in the conference in points per game with 1.89
- Third on the team in assists this season with four
- 50 career goals are the third most in IUP history

FIELD HOCKEY

Anouk Sickman (Antwerp, Belgium/Lazac Cellepe)

- Two-Time All-PSAC West First Team Selection
- Led Crimson Hawks in points (43) on 17 goals and nine assists
- Fourth in the PSAC in goals per game and fifth in assists per game
- 17 goals were fourth most in IUP history

Shannon Sullivan (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny)

- First Team all-PSAC West selection in 2011
- Received Second Team honor in 2010
- Was second on the team in scoring with 35 points on 14 goals and seven assists
- Sixth in PSAC in points per game and goals per game

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate)
NABC and Division II Bulletin All-American in 2011-12
- NABC and Daktronics Atlantic Region First team selection and PSAC West Player of the Year
- led the Crimson Hawks to a 23-6 record this season and a berth in the NCAA Atlantic Region tournament for the fourth-consecutive season
- ranked third in the PSAC in scoring at 18.5 points per game
- Scored in double-figures in every game.
- the IUP all-time leader in career assists (456), and is fourth on the all-time scoring list (1,635)
- Smith holds the IUP record for the most games played in IUP history (127)

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort)
WBCA and Division II Bulletin All-America Honorable Mention in 2011-12
- First team All-PSAC West
- Sixth in the PSAC in scoring with 14.8 points per game, reaching double-figures 26 times including each of the last 18 games.
- Averaged 20.5 points in IUP's four conference and NCAA tournament games with 6.5 rebounds per contest
- She went 26-for-31 from the free throw line in the postseason, averaging 36.3 minutes per game
- Led the Crimson Hawks and was 10th in the conference in, notching six double-doubles on the year.
- Led the team in blocks, was second in assists and steals and is just 15 points shy of becoming the 20th player in program history with 1,000 career points

WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George)
National Champion, Four-Time All-American at 2012 NCAA Championships
- National Champion in 200 Yard Butterfly with time of 1:58.84
- That time also set an NCAA Division II record
- Finished fifth in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, sixth in the 100 Yard Butterfly, and ninth in 200 Yard Backstroke at NCAA championships
- Set two meet records at PSAC championships in the 200 Yard Backstroke and the 200 Yard Butterfly
- Won three individual events at PSAC championships (100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke)
- 11-time Division II All-American
- PSAC Women's Swimmer of the Year in 2011
- Eight school records; three PSAC records; two PSAC championship meet records

Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West)
Three-Time All-American at 2012 NCAA Championships
- Earned All-American honors in three events
- Finished sixth overall in the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a school-record time at the NCAA championships
- Also Finished eighth overall in the 200 Yard Individual Medley and 400 Yard Individual Medley
- Broke two IUP records at PSAC championships, winning both the 200 Yard Butterfly and the 200 Yard Breaststroke

SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

Ethan Robinson (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard)
- Is an International Business and Economics major with a 3.85 cumulative grade point average
- Member of the Robert E. Cook Honors College here at IUP
- A past recipient of the PSAC Scholar-Athlete award
- Robinson has been a key contributor for a team that has won 84 games, two conference tournament championships, and appeared in three NCAA tournaments during his tenure

Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George)
- Cumulative 4.0 GPA in Speech Pathology and a member of Robert E. Cook Honors College
- Two-time PSAC Winter Top 10 recipient (2011, 2012)
- CSCAA (College Swimming Coaches Association of America) Scholar All-America (2010)
- Accepted into IUP's Speech Language Pathology graduate program for 2012-13
