SIMPSONVILLE, KY –
Zack Kempa (Brantford, ON/Assumption College School) wrapped up the third round in a tie for fifth place with a six-under par 210 while IUP finished in 14th place overall as the Crimson Hawks were eliminated from contention at the 2012 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at the Cardinal Club Golf Course outside of Louisville, Kentucky.
The Crimson Hawks missed the cut by 11 strokes, as the top eight teams advanced to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on Friday.
Kempa shot an even par 72 in the third round, finishing four shots behind individual champion Josh Creel of Central Oklahoma. Starting on the back nine, Kempa bogeyed a pair of holes before recording two birdies on the front, including his second on the par five ninth to get back to even.
Shooting a four-under in round one, Kempa sat in second place after the first day, three shots off the lead. He posted 10 birdies and four bogeys in his three rounds, playing at even or under the entire tournament.
Brad Boyle (Kingston, ON/Frontenac Secondary) finished in 38th place with a four-over 220 after entering the day at even. His tournament included two eagles and five birdies, as he finished his college career with a four-over 76 in the third round.
Derek Baker (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) finished in a tie for 51st with a seven-over 223, including a four-over 76 on the final day. He recorded eight birdies in total, with his last coming on the final hole of the third round.
The fourth finisher for IUP,
Jack Owen (Hampshire, U.K./Brockenhurst College) wrapped up the championships with a five-over par 77 in the third round, as he tied for 83rd with a 15-over 231 for the tournament. Owen also completed the course on Thursday with a birdie on the par five ninth, totaling four in the three rounds.
Sean Sweithelm (Indiana/Indiana) also completed his season with a birdie on the ninth hole, as he finished the day with an 11-over 83. He birdied three holes in the final round and seven overall, as he finished 101st with a 24-over 240.
IUP entered the day two spots off the cut in 10th place overall at seven-over, before shooting plus-13 in the third round to finish 14th. The Crimson Hawks finished with a 20-over 884 with rounds of 290, 293 and 301, consecutively.
The overall leader heading into match play on Friday is Chico State with a 13-under 851. Nova Southeastern sits in second at nine-under while Central Oklahoma (eight-under), CSU-Stanislaus (six-under), and Georgia State (two-under) round out the top five. Barry at plus-two, South Carolina-Aiken at plus-six, and Central Missouri at plus-nine also made the cut.
