Men's and Women's Teams Both Second After First Night of PSAC Swimming Championships

Thursday Night Results

MECHANICSBURG, PA - Brandon Hopkins (Marion, VA/Marion) broke his own school record in the 1000 yard freestyle to highlight IUP's night in the opening session of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's and Women's Swimming Championships on Thursday at Cumberland Valley High School.

Hopkins finished third overall in the event with a time of 9:31.03, eight seconds faster than his previous record he set at last year's conference championship meet.

That wasn't the only record set in the opening session as the women's 200 yard medley relay team of Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring), Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West), Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) and Taylor Snyder (Titusville, Pa. /Titusville) swam a time of 1:45.78 in the event, good for third place and a new school mark. The time was a little over one second faster than the previous record set again at last year's PSAC meet.

The pair of third place finishes have helped both team's wrap up Thursday night in second place on either side behind West Chester; the men with 57 points and the women with 41 points, tied with Clarion.

Friday morning prelim action is set to get underway at 10:00 a.m. with the 200 yard freestyle relay. Finals tomorrow will begin at 6:00 p.m.
