MECHANICSBURG, PA – The IUP women won the 200 freestyle relay title in school record breaking time to highlight the second day of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's and Women's Swimming Championships at Cumberland Valley High School.
The win helped the women finish the day in third place with 168 points through three sessions. The Crimson Hawks are right behind Clarion's 171.5 for second and trail first place West Chester which has 334 points.
The relay victory was the first of its kind for the school at the conference championship meet since 2000.
The team of
Taylor Snyder (Titusville, Pa. /Titusville),
Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring),
Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) and
Christina Janosky (Dover, Pa. /Dover ) touched the wall in an NCAA provisional time of 1:35.77, breaking the 18-year old record of 1:36.42.
Snyder, Shumaker, McAteer and Janosky each added NCAA provisional times in individual events. Snyder, McAteer, Shumaker all posted qualifying times in the 50 free at 24:09, 24:10 and 24:21, respectively. Janosky got hers in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.31.
Gabby Guttman (Allentown/Salisbury) gave IUP another NCAA provisional qualifier in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.75.
Allyson Mitidieri (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) helped the Crimson Hawks in the point column with a second place finish in the 200 yard IM with an NCAA provisional time of 2:05.75.
The women's 400 yard medley relay also hit a provisional standard with a time of 3:52.80.
The men will enter Saturday's action in sixth place with 144 points while West Chester leads with 333 points.
Saturday prelims are set to get underway at 10:00 a.m. with the 400 yard individual medley. Finals will begin at 6:00 p.m.
