Crimson Hawks Fly into PSAC Semifinals with Win over Mercyhurst

INDIANA, PA – Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) scored a match-clinching 6-2, 6-1 win in singles play to help lift IUP to a 5-1 win over Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday.

The victory sends the Crimson Hawks to Friday's semifinals where they will play Kutztown, the top seed out of the PSAC East.

IUP, the second seed in the West, wins its 13th straight match overall and improves to 16-6 on the season. The Lakers, the third seed in the West, fall to 14-4.

The Crimson Hawks came out of doubles play with a 2-1 lead, getting victories in the second and third spots. Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) and Emilia Osborne (Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom/Cedars ) defeated Rebecca Haener and Courtney Thompson 8-4 at two while Abby McCormick (Bethel Park, Pa. /Bethel Park) and McFail blanked Taylor Wedlake and Katelyn Caniford 8-0 at three. Mercyhurst's Caroline Bristol and Sarah Baich got the best of Katie Eaton (Halesowen, United Kingdom/Haybridge) and Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ) at number one, 8-6.

McCormick picked up IUP's first win in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Haener at number three. Next came Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) at number five, who defeated Wedlake 6-3, 6-1 to put the Crimson Hawks on top 4-1 before McFail's match-ending with at number six.

The semifinals match with the Golden Bears is scheduled for Friday at 11:00 a.m.

IUP will serve as the host for the semifinals and finals of the 2013 PSAC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships. Action gets underway with the West's number one seed, California, playing Millersville, the third seeded team from the East.
