Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as IUP defeated Pitt-Johnstown 79-56 in the first round of the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Basketball Championships at the KCAC.
The Crimson Hawks improve to 18-9 on the season and will now move onto the quarterfinals where they'll face PSAC West top seed Edinboro on the road. UPJ ends its inaugural season in the PSAC with a 10-17 overall record, including a 7-9 mark in the division.
The fourth-seeded Crimson Hawks held UPJ to 18 points below its season average, forcing the Mountain Cats to shoot just 32.7 percent from the floor and 31.3 percent from three-point range. The leaders in the PSAC with 7.9 threes per game, UPJ was able to hit just five tonight.
IUP also forced the Mountain Cats into 16 turnovers and held a huge rebounding edge of 50-to-28 on the night.
Stamp finished the night 7-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and went 5-of-6 from the foul line. She also had three steals and two assists in an efficient 29 minutes of work.
She was just one of four Crimson Hawks to score in double-figures on the night, as
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) and
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) each scored 15 points while
Amy Fairman (Creekside, Pa. /Marion Center) added 10. Stoner went 7-of-11 from the field and grabbed five rebounds and two steals while Stapleton went 5-of-8, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. She also had five rebounds.
In addition to her 10 points, Fairman dished out a team-high five assists and had two steals.
The Crimson Hawks started hot, scoring the first 10 points of the game before racing out to a 16-2 lead at the 14:32 mark of the first half. IUP went 6-of-12 in the game's first 5:28 while forcing the Mountain Cats to go 1-of-8 with two turnovers in the same time frame.
UPJ did start chipping away at its deficit as the Crimson Hawks went cold from the floor, going on a 21-7 run over an 8:09 span to tie the game at 23-23 with just over six minutes to play. IUP quickly answered the tie with a three by Stapleton and ended up finishing the half on an 8-0 run to take a 35-27 lead into the break.
The Crimson Hawks scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to take a 13-point lead at 42-29 just three minutes in. UPJ did cut the lead to 11 twice in the next couple minutes but a 13-1 run by the Crimson Hawks gave them a 23-point lead at 57-34 with 12:30 to go in the game.
IUP built its lead to as many as 30 in the second half as the Crimson Hawks outshot UPJ 52 percent to 30 percent in the final 20 minutes. All 14 IUP players saw action in the 23-point victory, with 11 adding to the scoring column.
The matchup with Edinboro will be on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. at the McComb Fieldhouse. It will be a rematch of last year's PSAC quarterfinals, with the Fighting Scots edging out IUP 75-71. Edinboro has picked up wins in both regular season games this season: a 66-59 win at Edinboro on Jan. 22 and a 69-63 comeback win in Indiana on Feb. 22.
