Box ScoreHARMAR, PA – In a match that was moved indoors and an hour away due to the threat of inclement weather, second seeded IUP disposed of third seed West Virginia State 5-3 in the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Atlantic Regionals.
The match was played at Alpha Tennis and Fitness in Harmar, Pa. instead of the Maple Street Courts on the campus of IUP.
Sophie Butland (Taunton, Somerset U.K./Bishop Fox's Community School) had the clinching victory at the second singles spot, gaining a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Andreea Slusarciuc. Also winning for the Crimson Hawks was 19
th-ranked
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1 over Brittany Franco and
Ranvita Mahto (Burlington, ON/Robert Bateman) over Diana Cortoros 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.
IUP picked up the first two victories on the day in doubles play. Butland and
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) defeated Cora Berna and Nadia Grlj 8-4 at No. 2 before Mahto and
Rachel Wood (Nottingham, U.K./West Bridgrord) beat Cotoros and Charlotte Sandy by an identical score at No. 3.
Timko and
Erika Schnaas (Mexico City, Mexico/Escuela Nacional Preparatoria ), the second ranked pairing in the region, fell to Slusarciuc and Franco 8-5 at No. 1.
The Crimson Hawks will now move onto the NCAA round 16 for the fourth consecutive season, where they will be matched up with Barry, the No. 1-ranked team in Division II, in the opening match in Altamonte Springs, Fla. That match will take place on Wednesday, May 14.
